Radio host, writer, and storyteller famous for his work on A Prairie Home Companion. His popular radio variety show, broadcast live from Saint Paul, Minnesota and various touring locations, featured a humorous "News from Lake Wobegon" segment, as well as numerous musical performances.

In 1966, he received an English degree from the University of Minnesota.

He began his radio career with Minnesota Educational Radio in 1969. He portrayed himself in the 2006 movie  A Prairie Home Companion.

He married Mary Guntzel in 1965, Ulla Skaerved in 1985, and Jenny Lind Nilsson in 1995.
